It’s been a pretty nice 3 day weekend so far.  Just hanging out with the wife and dog.  It’s nice to have her here with me finally.  We’re planning on seeing the fireworks later in the day.  I think they start around 9 o’clock at night.  It’ll be my wife’s first independence day here in the states.  The philippines celebrate Filipino / America friendship day today.  I thought that was nice.  I’m still reading newspapers and magazines for my public policy course.  I never thought it would be so difficult sitting around the house just reading, but so many other things take my concentration away.  I wasn’t married when I was in college before, so it’s something I’m going to have to get used to.  I’ve been reading the New York Times, The Economist, and Foreign Affairs Magazine almost everyday, or at least when they come to my kindle.  I have a Kindle DX which lets me download those newspapers and magazines very easily.  We’re still cleaning up the house a little bit everyday.  It’s such a mess, so many boxes.  My dog keeps pooping on the carpet, and I’m looking online for a solution, but there doesn’t seem to be a really good one handy.  We have him peeing, and pooping on these white pads which are for dogs to do their business inside.  They work pretty well except the dog actually has to use them.

I’m not really looking forward to going back to work in two days.  I’m on the back end of a three week vacation.  I spent 5 months in Afghanistan, in northeastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border.  I graduated from Officer Basic Course in December, and reported to Fort Carson with just enough time to have a little more training before getting on the plane for Afghanistan.  The training was pretty worthless for me, since this last deployment was my third.  I received some more first aid training, and then we did a whole lot of nothing.  Came to work, and sometimes there was some training, but most of the time we just went home.  We already had our flight to Afghanistan booked, so I know I had so many things to do.  Trying to get ready for a deployment when you just get to a new post really sucks.
